Best Days Out For Mini Adventurers.
A new sub-section with a round up of days out to help you plan weekends and holidays.
Hello!
For those of you who have signed up to my Substack via my old blog (Northumberland Family Diaries) you will know how I love to share with you days out with mini adventurers in tow. As a family of five, we have enjoyed many days out across the north east and beyond and I specifically like to find ways in which you can save money.
If you are new around here, you may be interested to know I have written a book all about days out and activities you can do with your children. It includes ways to budget and save money over the summer holidays (and lets face it this summer could potentially be the most costly yet with the rising cost of living!).
So the purpose of this new weekly section is to share with you a round up of “what’s on” across the north east and ways to plan your summer holiday. For further inspiration I recommend checking out the following:
Save on outdoor theatre performance “Wind In The Willows”. (ad)
I am super excited to be working with North East Family Fun and Alnwick Playhouse to share with you a great day out this summer (2023).
The Wind In The Willows is going to be performed at the Alnwick Garden this summer nearly EVERY day throughout the holidays. From Friday 28th July until Saturday 26th August, you can come and watch the retelling of Kenneth Grahame’s classic tale of Mole, Ratty, Badger and of course the troublesome Mr Toad.
“Tired of cleaning, Mole ventures out to the riverbank, where he befriends the resourceful Ratty, the gruff Badger and the infamous Toad of Toad Hall (Poop-poop!). Together this Summer, they explore the Wide World, and the Wild Wood, and try to keep Toad out of trouble…”
This production is taking place in the outdoor theatre space at the Alnwick Garden and your ticket for the show will also include your entry to the Gardens! So I recommend getting to the Gardens nice and early so you can enjoy a walk (or run with kids) around, a play in the maze before settling in for an afternoon performance of the Wind In The Willows. The approx running time is 2hours and is suitable for ages 3+.
The best part? Sam from North East Family Fun, and I both have discount codes to get you 20% off your booking! Read more on Sam’s website about how to make the most of visiting the town of Alnwick this summer.

Or use code GIRLABOUT20 to get 20% off bookings.
NE1’s Screen On The Green.
NE1’s hugely popular, Screen on the Green, a free open-air movie theatre returns for the summer on 3rd July, taking up its usual residence in Old Eldon Square in the heart of Newcastle until 3rd September.
This has been running for a few years now and is proving to be very popular and I can see why. Visiting Newcastle is always exciting (especially for us country bumpkins) and this just adds something extra to your day out.
This year they are adding “toddler Tuesdays” which I love! Toddler Takeover takes place at 10:30am on Tuesdays from late July through August with screenings of BBC adaptations of popular books by children's writer Julia Donaldson.
Ranger Jane Beach School.
Jane will already be taking bookings for the summer holidays for her Seashore Safaris which take place at Seahouses, on Northumberland’s coast.
NEW for 2023, you can also book via the website, “Discover snorkelling with Scuba Steve”. So if you fancy exploring more of the north east coast from below the waves, this is great introduction to snorkelling.
Mouth of the Tyne Festival.
A date for your diary to mark out if you up for a weekend of music, dance and street theatre: 6th - 9th July.
I’m going to do a sneaky little plug here for the dance company I work for called Meta4 Dance, who are going to be performing their “Jumpers For Goalposts” on the Main Street on both Saturday and Sunday. Guys, it is free to go along and watch and they also do a free dance workshop for children! The performance and workshop combines dance with football…what a combination.
Timings are below:
Workshop times - 12:20 and 14:45
Performance times - 13:45 and 16:00
It would great to be able to support small businesses via this weekly roundup so if you would like to be involved or know someone who would be just let me know.
Join me next week for another run down of things to do with your mini adventurers.
