Discovering Spellbound: The Lost Words and The Lost Spells

A visit to The Sill and a few words on a Winter Fox.

Hello everyone,

Well, this is a bit new and perhaps a wee bit of an experiment sharing a video on here. But I am hoping this lands straight in your inboxes without a hitch?

Last weekend we visited a site local to us called The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre, to explore the new exhibition from artist Jackie Morris and writer Rob Macfarlane. The video is a sneak peak of what to expect. Perfect for fans of the book The Lost Spells and The Lost Words.

I also wrote a little something this morning inspired by our visit:

A Winter Fox.

The fox lifts his nose and smells winter.

Still.

He was sure it was winter yesterday. And the day before that.

But there’s no mistaking the crisp touch of frost, a cold whisper in his ear: winter is here. Darkness dim lurks amongst the trees waiting to be found. The ground beneath his fragile paws is still, the world not yet fully awake.

He tiptoes stealthily, unheard, his bones beginning to jut out from under his fiery fur. Only the bushy tail remains plump, a reminder of what a healthy creature he was in spring. And he will be again once he finds new ground.

A crack in the woods, footsteps, alerts the fox to company. He is not alone. For even in winter, when all is quiet, silent and still, the heartbeat of others can now be heard more clearly.

He is not alone on this journey. There are others navigating winter too with cold paws. Tired wings and small bodies, adapting, burrowing, nesting, resting. Waiting for the first buds of spring. Waiting, waiting. For it is winter, still.
