Couldn't have written this better myself. I haven't been to America but I have been "obsessed" since I was a teen! I used to get brochures and work my way through each state. At 1 point, in my dreams, I was going to take time out and visit each state and write a book. Obviously life took over and I'm not in a financial position to do so. I watched Thelma & Louise and wanted to go on a road trip! Home Alone/Home Alone 2 - perfect Christmas viewing and how I visualise Christmas in America. The negatives never come into play when dreaming!
I truly hope you make it one day 🤞🏻 it is a plan for Steve and I to do a road trip once the kids have left home 😅 although sometimes the planning is just as fun isn't it? So we can indulge in that for a little longer!
I totally understand your thoughts with this one Beth. And I have similar thoughts as I too romanticise America, particularly New York after watching the same shows all my life! I went to New York in 2014 and I did love it, it was fab, but as you've pointed out there is a darker side. My dad actually went a few weeks ago and he said he couldn't believe how expensive everything had become and how you could smell weed on every corner. I've been to LA too and I would agree that the Hollywood sign is underwhelming, as is Hollywood itself in my opinion. America looks fantastic on the screen but I'm not sure it always hits the mark when you visit. That being said, there are still places I want to visit over there for sure!
Yes the price of food and drinks is mad! My husband spent a whole year saving up spending money and we certainly needed it (and that was without going mad and over spending.) I feel I still need to see these places, I think it is just the scale of it all. The mountains would be cool to explore...
Morning your thoughts on America and New York are an interesting and thought provoking read.
I've visited different parts of America but never New York. Hubby has been on numerous occasions for business. He doesn't like it and tells me I would dislike it to. To tell the truth I'm not a City fan full stop more a country bumpkin. Landscape and nature more my thing. Though I did watch and love Friends. But where was that actually filmed?
Warner Brothers Ranch in California! The romanticising in tv and films can fool is all.
So we went to the Friends museum in New York (yes that actually exists) and while I know it wasn't actually filmed there they made it feel as if it was! It's all trickery really that we buy into. And I totally agree with you about being country bumpkins - I think that is why I can only do city visits in short bursts. London is a max three days for me!
