Dark, early mornings with little hands playing
Winter with children
Magical and wondrous
Once you look past the morning stress
Of putting on all the layers
And leaving the house on time.
One loves the snow, one hates to be cold
Keeping everyone happy seems a challenge
Winter with children
Highlighting time spent indoors
Too much screen time
Not enough fresh air.
Until they are dragged out for a walk
“But we don’t want to”
No-one ever regrets it afterwards
The benefits are a welcomed relief
As cold wind nips our cheeks
There’s the sun on our faces.
Dressing gowns and slippers
Coming down the stairs
With curtains drawn a little longer
In our cocoon of home
Hibernating with left over Christmas treats
Slow evenings and board games.
The promise of snow
Sledging, snowmen and snowball fights
Frosty icicles line the window pane
Creating a new world for them to explore
Children in winter
Love the changing weather.
We know it doesn’t last forever this winter chill
As we embrace each different season
We countdown to holidays
Sunshine and the anticipation of what’s to come
It will be here before we know it
Then we will talk about Children In Spring.
I don’t know about you, but I have seen so much positivity around winter this year… Perhaps we are accepting that winter happens and it is better to embrace the season instead of dreading it. It won’t be long until the nights are light again and I will be complaining about the children not going to sleep because the sun is still shining. I will miss our cosy mornings, all wrapped up, hiding from the world for a little longer. I don’t drink hot chocolate at all in the summer, so slurping as much as I can until then.
Finally, the winter is the perfect time for adventures. I don’t know what it is about this time of year, but it feels that more exciting when you go out in the dark for a drive. A walk at the beach is bracing leaving you feeling invigorated. Have you ever had a car picnic in the winter? The kids love it. Pack plenty of blankets, yummy food and pull up at your favourite view point, opening up the boot for everyone to sit in.
As I write this, we have woken up to a light blanket of snow here in Northumberland. It looks very pretty as the sun is now shining but the temperature is -4 degrees.
Wrap up warm and take care x ☕️
Beautiful poem Bethanie x
A beautiful poem Beth ❤️- can relate to the bit about no-one wanting to go for a walk but not regretting it after! I've also loved how much positivity there is around winter this year, it's definitely made me embrace the seasonal magic of Jan more. Also love the idea of a car picnic and eating while sitting in the boot watching a lovely view - one to try this weekend I think! X
